California expenses have compelled me to search for bargains in unexpected places, and I have been somewhat successful. Take, for instance, this $4 off-the-shoulder white cotton/modal shirt I got from American Eagle:
I’m taking a break from my Haruki Murakami reading marathon to pick up something quite different: White Noise by Don Delillo. In stark contrast to The Wind Up Bird Chronicle (and other Murakami novels), White Noise is refreshingly crisp in its imagery and dry in its humor. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy Murakami – I do; however, I’d been feeling rather disconnected and I suspected it was his influence, so I chose to pick up something a little less surreal.
What are you reading for summer?

I can totally see how reading Murakami can make you feel disconnected. For me personally though, as someone who lives inside their own head most of the time anyway, I actually felt more in touch with his novels that I do with other writers.

i am kind of loving the off-the-shoulder tees at the moment… so comfy and light and breathable! and for $4?! that’s hard to beat… i might need to make a run to american eagle. ;)

As you may have noticed from lj, I am hooked on David Mitchell. I am about to start his other novel “Cloud Atlas”. I have a very bad habit of sticking to one writers work for some time until I move on…other things on my list are classics: The Great Gatsby, Zooey & Franny, The Picture of Dorian Gray…
And I agree with Murakami making you feel disconnected. His books somehow have the power to make you look at things differently. And I agree with Lynn.

Yes, I saw you recent post! I didn’t read the entire thing to avoid spoilers, but you definitely piqued my interest! I will look into picking up a Mitchell novel soon~

Wow, I know how you feel about Murakami making you feel disconnected. I love reading his books a lot, but sometimes I feel like I’m going around with the voice of his main character (s? it seems it’s usually the same) narrating my life, which gets a little disorienting. Anyway, love your blog, beautiful photos!
