Numéro China’s sophomore issue yeilded a few beautiful editorials that capture a classic, Western beauty ideal, heavily influenced by modern Chinese art. The following shoots in particular seemed to pay heavy tribute to Wong Kar-Wai, which was oddly appropriate for an issue featuring Faye Wong, the spritely star of his 1994 film, Chungking Express. Below are just a few images from each editorial – see the bottom of the post for credits & where to find the full editorials.
In the editorial below, titled “Film Noir”, Du Juan is perfectly cast as an enigmatic woman with clasically long eyebrows, cat-eyes, and dramatic lips. Dominated by acidic colors and a hazy atmosphere, this editorial is extremely reminiscent of the genre for which this editorial was named.
In “Heiress”, featuring Grace Gao (the issue’s covergirl), Grace Gao dons a wardrobe of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Yves Saint Laurent- all favorites of the legendary fashion icon, Grace Kelly – to whom the title may refer.
Although I have not yet seen the full article, the teaser image of the Faye Wong editorial has me extremely excited:
