Wow, I’ve been incredibly swamped lately. I have this terrible habit of over-booking myself, and between school and freelance projects (including another food truck!) I haven’t had time to do anything fun! However, I have managed to find five minutes before bed every night to try the sensational sock bun, in an attempt to get beautiful heatless Loepsie curls, but alas, no luck there. I haven’t given up trying, though!
Have you managed to make sock bun curls work? If so, what’s your process? I’m beginning to think my hair is too long and too thick!
(Regardless of whether or not the curls are working, I am beyond happy to have found an easy, quick way to throw my hair up in a perfectly-formed, bobby-pin-less [!!!] bun!)

I’ve been wearing my hair like that quite a bit lately but I’ve never thought of using it as a way to curl my hair. I’ve actually banned myself from using any heat on my hair this month so I might just have to try it out and let you know if it works or not xoxo

I tried it and the curls looked really uneven and weird, but my sock bun also didn’t look as smooth and intact as yours. The end result always looks so good in the youtube videos!

The sock bun can be tricky, sometimes. Since I’m a curly haired vixen, it works best in one of two ways: barely-damp-mostly-air-dried hair with some curl-holding product, or unwashed-for-a-day hair. With either of those, do the same sock bun and leave it overnight. The next morning, don’t undo it until the absolute last minute before going out. Then be as gentle as possible taking out the sock. You might want to have a curling iron handy, for little touch ups.
Also, I’ve been pondering if a thinner fabric of sock would produce tighter curls… Something to experiment on, perhaps?
The only thing I can’t figure out with my own fiery curls is what to do with my little wispies near my face. I love pulling them out to soften some hairstyles, but they’re short enough to barely be pulled into a sock bun, leaving them only half… Well, socked. I’ve taken to sort of sweeping them back and trying to blend them as well as I can.
Hope this helps!

I’ve been using this method with a stretchy headband for the last few weeks and I really like it since it’s easy and comfortable and I only leave my hair up in it for 20 minutes and I get nice loose curls.

The bun looks really cute! I don’t have enough hair for that though, haha.

My hair is too short to try it, but it always looks great on other people!

I tired it a while back and they worked alright for me, but soon after taking them down and admiring my curls, they started to just fall out on their own… Maybe I could have worn the bun longer, or maybe they would have lasted if I had used product or sprayed it with hairspray… But given that I do a lot of “natural curling” that always works great without product, I don’t feel like I should have to use product to get the curls to stay… So I haven’t tried the sock bun again, but I think I will… At the very least the bun itself it pretty cute.
And for the record, I didn’t have a sock to cut up on hand so I used a rag, using basically the same method of rolling the hair. It stayed up pretty well on it’s own but even better with some clips. I would have rather used the sock though, the rag was too thick.
And I don’t know if you’ve tried them (maybe you already have) but I have had GREAT luck with curling with strips of fabric. And I can change it up from super kinky curls to looser curls based on how close to the scalp I roll and how thick the piece of hair is for each roll. If that makes sense.

Is this sock bun thing something I’ve missed being out of the US for the past year?
Congrats on the freelance projects! Art and FOOD sounds like a fantastic combination.

My gosh you’ve got some skillz! If my hair was long enough for this, I just envision myself getting my hair all tangled up and nowhere near a bun, lol ):

Hello Catherine, I found your blog today through a series of fortuitous links and I instantly fell in love with your sense of style, positive attitude, and fashion photography (and little Bunny). I’m also a university student with a love for Japanese art/culture. I look forward to keeping up with your beautiful site :)

BTW, this is your mom…I tried the sock bun too and I really like how nice and big the bun is and then I had another idea…With the popularity of “updo’s” in that 60′s sort of style – why not make three or 4 smaller sock buns and create a pretty updo with a headband? Might be easier for us that have lots of long thick hair…

Found this place on pinterest. I haven’t tried this yet but I found some tips here: http://www.kaylaaimee.com/2011/10/i-heart-pinterest-sock-bun-curls/
Would it work better for thicker hair if you divided it up into, say, 3 buns instead?
