2013 was a milestone year for me. I graduated from my university with honors and recognition, secured a full-time job, participated in a few art exhibitions, traveled to a new place that felt like home (Portland), took multiple trips to one of my favorite cities (New Orleans), and made so many new friends. Of course, the past year wasn’t without its challenges; I said goodbye to two close family members, my Grandpa Pat and my great-grandmother Mimi, both within the span of a couple of months. While there isn’t much that can make death more palatable, I felt very fortunate to have spent time with both of them this year before the passed.
I couldn’t think of a better way to close the year. I spent the final couple of weeks binging on Tex Mex with my twin sister who was visiting from across the country. On New Year’s Eve, I shared nachos with an old and dear online friend Cassie, who was stopping through Texas on her way to Brazil (!!!!). I rang in midnight with Spice Girls, shots, and friends. Lots of Beyoncé. Champagne kisses. Sore feet. Makeup fully intact the next morning. (Still can’t find my heels.)
New Years is always a frightening reminder of how quickly time passes. Just a few days ago, my friend of twenty years just gave birth to her first child, a baby boy. Today, my little sister turns seventeen. Thank god I color my hair because I’m pretty sure it’s grey underneath.
