“Lady Grey” by Tim Walker

Posted on March 10, 2010 at 10:57 am, in Fashion

Very rarely these days do I come across an editorial as decadent as Tim Walker’s “Lady Grey” editorial for Vogue Italia (March 2010). The copious beads and overflowing tulle; satin ballet shoes and hardwood floors; exquisite molding and chandeliers juxtaposed against peeling paint; bunny masks and bug ears: the amalgamation of these elements capture an antiquated aesthetic and place it in a wholly modern context that pits beauty against decay, and classicism against satire. In the same spirit as Kelly Ann, I could not not share it. Below are a few of my favorites from the editorial. Click the thumbnails to enlarge.

Maschina

The other night I wore my Maschina top out with my synthetic leather pants and a cocoon cardigan from Target.

Modal and Silk

Posted on February 19, 2010 at 2:39 am, in Fashion

Thank you, everyone, for the kind words in response to my last entry. I talked with one of my favorite ladies (another Kathryn!) and I feel much better.

The arrival of my new Alternative Apparel shirt from Karmaloop was no doubt another small thing that lifted my spirits. While I can’t call myself a “textile nerd” necessarily, I have a penchant for modal (a textile spun from beech trees) due to its incredibly soft texture. It also breathes exceptionally well (much better than polyester), making it a great lounge material as well. The particular shirt I bought was a 90% modal and 10% silk blend, lending to a more sheer and slinky feel than my other modal shirts (which are a modal-cotton blend), and for less than $30, it feels so incredibly luxurious. It’s absolutely comparable to T by Alexander Wang, and far cheaper.

While I do love that its sheer, it’s a bit too sheer for completely practical use. When going out, I’ll definitely have to throw a blazer or sweater over it (which shouldn’t be a problem in our current weather, but eh…) Anyway, everyone should go get this staple tee! It’s truly amazing!

P.S. I curled my hair! What do you think? I’m trying to love the blonde at least a little before I go back to red.

P.P.S. Sorry for the terrible lighting!

Agent Provocateur: An Obsession

Posted on January 23, 2010 at 3:53 am, in Fashion

Some girls collect designer shoes, while others collect designer handbags. Me? I collect designer lingerie.

Agent Provocateur

Two years ago, I moved to Los Angeles (for a short six-month stint) and landed a job working at Nordstrom in the lingerie department. Prior to holding this job, I cared very little for lingerie, let alone anything that cost more than $60. Within a few weeks, however, I quickly developed a soft-spot for high-quality lace, unlined bras, and oh yeah, Agent Provocateur, after visiting the store on Melrose for the first time.

Agent Provocateur

While its price point is high, Agent Provocateur lingerie is by legions the most comfortable, well-constructed, durable, and gorgeous lingerie I’ve yet to encounter. For the past two years I’ve amassed 5 bras, one bodysuit, and a few other extraneous items and I hardly ever wear anything else. When Agent Provocateur announced its winter sale, I couldn’t resist picking up a few extra pieces.

Aliyah

Sadly, this Aliyah demi-bra is going back! It just didn’t fit properly, which turned out to be a huge disappointment. I love the leopard-print tulle and the black elastic trim. I also just realized that I photographed this one inside-out! Oops!

Snakeskin lace bra

This snakeskin lace bra is so intricate, and the fit is so snug and comfortable! My boyfriend commented that it looks itchy, but I’ve been wearing it for well over two hours now and can’t feel it at all. The lace is beautiful, intricate, and most importantly, soft.

My favorite piece out of my new loot, however, is the Maschina bodysuit. The entire thing is a dark nude tulle with a thick (it almost feels embroidered) barbed wire pattern. In one word, it’s “hardcore.” I have a penchant for things that juxtapose the macabre and the delicate, and this bodysuit embodies that aesthetic perfectly. I’m heading out to Target tomorrow to buy a long black cardigan (if they have any?) to throw over this so I can wear it out as a top!

I also love the faux leather (pleather?) bow! The perfect touch.

When it comes to lingerie, my largest pet peeve is when I hear girls say they can’t justify buying nice things because they “don’t have a boyfriend” or “have an a-cup.” Ridiculous! I don’t think everyone should go out and buy an Agent Provocateur bra (though I highly recommend it!), but I do believe that gorgeous underwear is ultimately meant to only be enjoyed by one person, and that’s the wearer. In the end, it’s about comfort and a new kind of confidence that comes only from yourself- that under your business suit, or Zelda hoodie and sweatpants (my current ensemble), you’re wearing something simultaneously comfortable and beautiful, and only YOU know it. There are those who can only understand confidence gained from others’ approval, and then those who understand that confidence can also be gained from keeping your own secrets.

Pink!

Posted on January 18, 2010 at 6:23 pm, in Fashion

I have a really small wardrobe, so of course you’ve all seen this before! I just wanted to capture how accurately my Miu Miu bag matches my Orla Kiely dress… pretty much perfectly!

I’m so sad that winter vacation is basically over; I am simply not ready to return to school. I’ve had way too many awesome, late nights playing old video games and I don’t want to trade that for all-nighters doing art projects!

Bow Jacket

Posted on January 17, 2010 at 12:32 am, in Fashion

My boyfriend teases me about my penchant for bows- I just absolutely love them on everything! Take, for instance, this lovely $15 sweater-jacket that my sister scored at the H&M in Vegas:

Worn with an American Apparel skirt. I felt like a bit of a flight attendant so I didn’t wear it out. I’m also not a huge fan of black/white contrast, because I find it a bit too easy. Nonetheless, it photographs pretty nicely, I think!

My “tools of the trade”: my iPhone, pocket moleskine (for my clutch), moleskine planner, and a large 13″ sketchbook.

Plaid Texan Dress

Posted on January 7, 2010 at 8:15 pm, in Fashion

My sister’s in Las Vegas with my parents right now. It didn’t bother me at all that they were going without me, until I learned that they were stopping in the Grand Canyon, and when I remembered that Vegas had an In-N-Out Burger. I am a sucker when it comes to this made-to-order food establishment; I lived on it for a good six months during my otherwise unpleasant stint in LA. I haven’t had it for well over a year and I do get random cravings! It’s really bad, probably.

Anyway, the point of all of this is my sister took her camera with her, so I wasn’t able to redo these pictures. You may also notice that I have a much darker hair color now (to my displeasure)!

This Anthropologie dress was given to me by my boyfriend for Christmas!! It wasn’t until I wore it at home for the first time that I realized just how Texan it was. I’m trying to embrace it!

Narwhals and Unicorns

Posted on December 29, 2009 at 6:56 am, in Fashion, Toys & Collections

Currently I’m in the process of migrating See Creatures to a new, shinier server. I’ve been busy working on client websites lately, and battling a terrible sinus infection, but over the next few days I’ll be using my spare minutes to update the look of See Creatures to be more compatible with all web browsers, in addition to a special iPhone version (in celebration of receiving my own iPhone, which by the way, I’m in love with it!)

Unicorn vs. Narwhal

My little sister knows me too well; for Christmas, she gave me this Unicorn vs. Narwhal battle set! I’d been pining over it at our local comic store (I love collecting “designer toys”) and she used her allowance to buy it for me. So sweet! She also got me the Unicorn Code tote bag that I’m sure will prove perfect for carrying my texts:

I can’t wait to add the Cold War Unicorns Play Set to my collection; it will make the best conversation piece for visitors, no?

Here are a few more pictures of my Miu Miu bag, too, for those who are interested.

Sorry, one more

Inside the clutch Another picture of Miu Miu

I only wish it could fit my Moleskine planner, which I typically carry around to parties & outings for recording quotes. Looks like I have an excuse to get a pocket Moleskine, I guess!

Happy giftmas!

Posted on December 25, 2009 at 8:21 pm, in Fashion

Merry Christmas – I hope everyone’s was safe and fun! My boyfriend’s little sister was sick all day, and my twin sister also managed to wreck our car on the ice. (Yes, we had a white winter in northern Texas!) Luckily she’s okay, and the damage is minimal, but it was definitely a stressful event. Regardless, we all managed to have a food-filled, family-filled holiday and I’m glad we all managed to survive another year. ♥

I think this year has to be one of the best as far as loots go. I was gifted with a pink snuggie, a Unicorn vs. Narwhal battle set (can’t wait to post pictures), a Unicorn Code tote bag, a beautiful plaid Anthropologie dress, and most importantly, an iPhone (to replace my old, broken Sprint). I can’t wait to plaster this Deer Wearing Gym Socks decal on the back of it! But first – a protective case!

Most importantly, though, I bought myself the following (it arrived on Christmas Eve):
IMG_7180

As you can probably agree, the most rewarding feeling is buying something that you have wanted for years with your own, hard-earned money. When this popped up on eBay at a very opportune time (I had just received a webdesign check AND made a 4.0 in university), I couldn’t pass it up. I have loved this Miu Miu collection — the aged vitello totes — for years, and I stupidly hesitated buying it when it was in stores. I’m glad I took the chance, because the leather is so supple, the hardware shiny, and most importantly, this little clutch is SO INCREDIBLY SPACIOUS.

This photo is probably the most representative of the color. As you can see, it has some intentional aging around the stitching, perfectly illuminated by the gold hardware. Ah! I’m in love. I adore how girly the color is, without being too “Barbie” (as it appeared in the photos).

More photos later, I really just wanted to pop in and wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
